The Cavity Wall Insulation Scandal For Wind and Rain Driven Areas – How Will This Affect UK Carbon Credits

Cavity wall insulation (CWI) has been installed in homes across the UK for many years.

When installed properly, CWI can reduce energy costs considerably but the reality is that there are millions of homes, estimated at around 6 million in the UK, that now have severe problems due incorrectly installed CWI

In recent years and, in an effort to hit carbon reduction targets, the government introduced a scheme to encourage homeowners and landlords to install CWI in their properties.

Funded by the energy companies, homeowners were offered the opportunity to have their properties insulated at a subsidised rate and even free.

However, properties in areas that are susceptible to wind driven rain known as zone 4 areas, are not suitable for CWI. Filling the cavity that was designed to prevent water ingress has caused irreparable damage in some instances.

The problem has been bubbling under the surface for a few years but due to the efforts of a few people, this issue was brought to the attention of a number of MP’s including Amber Rudd and has been debated in parliament and subsequently a report was commissioned.

The report was due to be published in Spring 2016 and yet it is still to be released as of September 2016.

The problem from the Government perspective, is that they have claimed the carbon credits for around 12 million homes and to lose 50% of that would be devastating.

Time will tell, but the pressure is growing and people that are suffering with damage caused by poorly installed CWI are getting louder which means it cannot be ignored for much longer.

Some say that this scandal will be bigger than PPI and by the number of law firms sitting up and taking notice of the issue, I can well believe it.

“That this House notes that cavity wall insulation (CWI) has been installed in millions of homes in successive government-backed schemes, but that in many cases the insulation has failed, acting not as a barrier to keep heat on the inside but as a bridge to allow water penetration from the outside.”
